Kim Evans is the creative force behind the Little and Friday cafés and bakery in Auckland. A sculptor by training, she is a self-taught cook who opened her first café Ice It in Devonport some years ago. When that closed she started selling her baking at the Takapuna markets.
The demand quickly grew to the point that she needed a commercial-sized kitchen which she sited in a disused shop in Belmont. She wasn’t open to the public, but people would tap on the window at all hours wanting to buy her delicious cakes, loaves and pies. So she added a shop counter and opened first one, then two, then four days a week.
Within a year it got so busy she took over the shop next door and became a fully- fledged six days a week café – albeit one with second-hand china and painted beer crates for pavement seating. Now into her sixth year she has four cafes over Auckland and is just completing her third.
“Business on Toast” is presented by Devonport Rotary and Devonport Business Association the fourth Friday of every 2nd month for business & interested people living or working in and around Devonport.
